The Seward Highway @ Ninilchik River Bridge RWIS ESS is located on
the right southbound side, behind the guardrail just past the
Ninilchik River Bridge. The Mission Avenue intersection is
just to the south of the RWIS ESS. A single view camera
provides a close up pavement and panoramic south view. No
luminarie is available. Some ambient light provides one
nighttime image. The Ninilchik DOT Maintenance Station,
approximately 1 mile to the south, maintains the Sterling Highway
from the Cohoe Loop Road area to Anchor River.
The area from Clam Gulch to above Homer experiences a wide
variation in icing tendencies. With the many low lying areas
and small streams, these areas tend to freeze up earlier than other
areas. Bridge icing can be a concern. Maritime air
masses override continental polar air, producing widespread
stratoform precipitation. The Ninilchik – Anchor
Point area is known for heavy precipitation.
